A user-centered Minimal Viable Product
To develop an effective and user friendly app, we clearly defined its business goals and user needs. By interviewing a.o. project managers, skippers and captains, we got a clear vision of the current dredging process and the ways in which the app can support this process.
From static planner to dynamic tool
An efficient trip strategy depends on many complex factors. The app would only be successful if it supported the decision-making of the skippers and captain, instead of the app telling them what to do. The focus of the app thus shifted from a static travel planner to a dynamic tool that offers value to the skipper among already existing systems on the ship.
Current overview of dredge and drop locations
User research showed the MVP of the app shouldn’t just incorporate planned trips, but also keep a log of the trips results. Via a simple form the skipper can track how much he has dumped on each trip. That way he always has a reliable and up-to-date overview of the work area. More convenience and more accurate advice for the skipper.
Adapted to the context
When developing the app we didn’t only consider its features and their visual translation, but also took into account the physical context in which the app would be used. The whole team visited the ship where the app was tested. Together with the crew we reviewed the UI and completely adapted it to the user process at the ship.
